Wednesday, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the H7N9 virus probably came from migratory birds from East Asia that mixed with domesticfowl in China's Yangtze River delta region around Shanghai.
That means that individual birds can be assigned to breeds, and individual breeds to a family tree that may, in time, stretch back to the domestic chicken's wild ancestor, the Burmese jungle fowl.
