Building large amounts of high density housing, which San Francisco and Oakland do already have, makes no sense if the people living there cannot get anywhere.
Clearly, the success of Detroit Future City depends on building population density around certain neighborhoods that are already in decent shape and stabilizing home values there.
Its main city, Portland, became the poster child of the "smart growth" movement by forcing up density, building an extensive light-rail system and restoring its urban core.
