On February 22nd, in Nagano itself, the mayor of Salt Lake City will formally invite the Winter Olympic circus to pitch its tent in his city in four years' time.
The irritation is not diminished by the fact that the city council recently spent two weeks debating whether circus elephants should be allowed into the city (they are badly treated, said the opponents).
The Drake Circus scheme, which was supposed to have happened in the late 1980s, will give the city a large covered shopping mall linking to its retail centre for the first time.
