Throughout the Middle Ages (pre-1430) and Renaissance (ca. 1430-1600), trumpets retained their traditional military and ceremonialfunctions: they were used mainly for signals and fanfares.
The goal is to replace a largely ceremonial system, originally designed to drape dictatorial rule in a cloak of electoral legitimacy, with one that functions as a vehicle to carry the will of voters.
