Mr. Broadus said his musical shift was in part about "longevity, me trying to still be here and be relevant" and that it wasn't simply about marketing.
Kwame Dawes, author of "Bob Marley: Lyrical Genius" and the coming poetry collection "Duppy Conquerer, " says Mr. Broadus is part of a long line of non-Jamaican musicians who have dipped into the reggae genre.
"I don't think I'll ever be able to leave hip hop entirely, I just feel like this is something that's necessary for right now for me to get my message across in the music that I'm making right now, " Mr. Broadus says.
